What is open on a Monday?
Monday is the day that breaks plans in Belgrade. The Museum of Yugoslavia is closed, and so is the Roman Well at Kalemegdan. Nebojša Tower is closed on both Monday and Tuesday.
The Nikola Tesla Museum, on the other hand, is open on Monday, from 10:00 to 18:00. Saint Sava Temple is open as usual, and Kalemegdan park, Knez Mihailova and Zemun are there all day.
So on a Monday, build the day around Tesla and Saint Sava and leave the Museum of Yugoslavia for another day. Hours can change, so check the official sites before you go.
Nikola Tesla Museum: hours, tours and tickets
The museum is at Krunska 51, in a villa in Vračar. It is open Monday from 10:00 to 18:00 and Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 20:00.
You cannot walk around on your own. Entry is only with a guided tour, which starts on the hour and lasts about 45 minutes. The English tour costs RSD 800, and you pay in cash only, so bring dinars.
Arrive a few minutes before the hour. If you miss the start, you wait for the next tour. Current details are on the museum's visit page.
Is the Tesla Museum worth it?
For most visitors, yes, as long as you know what to expect. It is a small museum, not a big science centre. You see Tesla's personal things, documents and models of his inventions, and the guide tells the story of his life and work.
The guided tour, with its short demonstrations, is what people remember. Forty-five minutes is the right length, even for travellers who are not into science.
It is harder for very young children who cannot stand still through a whole tour. For families, see our Belgrade with kids guide, which covers the free children's tour.
Museum of Yugoslavia: hours, tickets, free days
The Museum of Yugoslavia is at Mihaila Mike Jankovića 6, in Dedinje. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00 and closed on Mondays. It is also closed on 1 January, 7 January, Good Friday and Easter.
The ticket is RSD 800. Children up to 10 go in free, and individual visitors get free entry on the first Thursday of the month. There is a guided tour in English on Saturdays at 11:00.
Is it worth it? If you are curious about Tito and a country that no longer exists, yes. The complex has more than one building, so give it an hour or two. Hours can change, so check the official museum site before you go.
Where is Tito buried?
Josip Broz Tito is buried in the House of Flowers, part of the Museum of Yugoslavia complex. His white marble grave lies in a hall that was once a winter garden, and you see it as part of the museum visit.
The House of Flowers also shows the relay batons that young people carried across Yugoslavia every year for Tito's birthday. They say a lot about how the country saw him.
It is a quiet place, so keep your voice down. Combine it with Saint Sava Temple, a short drive away, and you see two very different sides of Belgrade's history in one morning.
Visiting Saint Sava Temple and the crypt
Saint Sava Temple is one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world, and its dome is the landmark of Vračar. Entry is free. The temple has no published visiting hours, but it is usually open through the day.
Do not miss the crypt below the main floor. It is covered in golden mosaics and easy to miss if you do not know about it, so take the stairs down. In the main church, look up at the mosaic in the dome.
This is a working church. Services take priority, so parts may be closed or a liturgy may be on. Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, and women may want a scarf. Keep your voice down and ask before taking photos during a service.
Seeing all three in half a day
All three fit into half a day by car, but not on a Monday, when the Museum of Yugoslavia is closed. Start at the Museum of Yugoslavia when it opens at 10:00, drive to Saint Sava Temple, then go to the Tesla Museum for a tour on the hour.
By bus and on foot it is possible, but the distances and the hills eat time, and the Tesla tours give you a fixed slot. With a driver waiting outside each stop, the morning runs to the clock.
Our Saint Sava and Avala Tower tour covers the temple and adds the view from Avala, and the 6-hour tour by van has time for two museums. Drivers give basic information, but for the history behind each place, add a licensed guide for 120 € for up to 4 hours. Write to us on WhatsApp or Viber at +381 61 732 6261.
