What is the best day trip from Belgrade?
For most first-time visitors, the answer is Novi Sad with Sremski Karlovci. The drive is short, both towns are easy to walk, and you get a fortress, a baroque centre and a wine village in one day.
If you prefer nature and monasteries, choose Fruška Gora or the Ovčar-Kablar Gorge. For the Danube and a medieval fortress, go east to Silver Lake and Golubac. For shopping, the Inđija outlet is the closest trip of all.
The driving times below are for normal traffic, from central Belgrade to the destination. Summer weekends and holidays can add time on the roads out of the city.
Novi Sad and Sremski Karlovci (about 1 h 15 min)
Novi Sad is the second largest city in Serbia, about 1 hour 15 minutes north of Belgrade by car. The old centre around the main square and Zmaj Jovina street is made for walking, and Petrovaradin Fortress, across the Danube, has the best view of the city.
Sremski Karlovci is a small baroque town on the way, at the foot of Fruška Gora. It is known for its wine cellars, the Patriarchate court and the old gymnasium, and it fits easily into the same day.
For a private ride, see our Belgrade to Novi Sad transfer.
Is Novi Sad worth visiting from Belgrade?
Yes, if you have a free day. Novi Sad is calmer and smaller than Belgrade, and it feels different: Austro-Hungarian buildings, the Danube close to the centre and a slower pace in the cafes.
It is close enough for half a day, but a full day is better. That gives you time to walk the centre, climb up to Petrovaradin, have lunch and stop in Sremski Karlovci on the way back.
A fast train runs between Belgrade and Novi Sad, and it is a good choice if you only want the city. Check times and tickets on srbijavoz.rs. By car, you can add Karlovci and the Fruška Gora monasteries on the same day without planning connections.
Fruška Gora monasteries and Vrdnik spa (about 1 h 10 min)
Fruška Gora is a low mountain and national park between Belgrade and Novi Sad, covered in forest and vineyards. Its slopes hold a string of Orthodox monasteries, many of them several centuries old, and small wineries.
Vrdnik, a spa village on the southern side of the mountain, is about 1 hour 10 minutes from Belgrade. It makes a relaxed day: one or two monasteries in the morning, lunch, then the thermal pools in the afternoon.
Public transport to the monasteries is limited, so this is where a car makes the biggest difference. See the Belgrade to Vrdnik and Fruška Gora transfer.
Ovčar-Kablar Gorge monasteries (about 2 h)
About 2 hours south of Belgrade, the West Morava river cuts a deep gorge between the Ovčar and Kablar mountains. Small monasteries sit along the river and on the slopes, which is why the area is sometimes called the Serbian Mount Athos.
It is a quiet day out: short walks between monasteries, the viewpoint on Kablar above the river bends and lunch by the water. Plan a full day and do not try to rush it.

Silver Lake and Golubac Fortress (about 1 h 45 min to Silver Lake)
Silver Lake is an arm of the Danube near Veliko Gradište, about 1 hour 45 minutes east of Belgrade. In summer it is a lake beach with swimming, boats and fish restaurants, and outside the season it is quiet.
Further down the Danube, Golubac Fortress stands where the river enters the Iron Gates gorge. Its towers rise straight out of the water, and the sight is striking even from the road. Silver Lake and Golubac make a good pair for one day.

Zlatibor and Kopaonik (3 h+, better as overnight)
Zlatibor and Kopaonik are the best-known mountain resorts in Serbia, and both are more than 3 hours from Belgrade. Zlatibor is a green plateau with easy walks, viewpoints and a busy town centre, and Kopaonik is the main ski resort in winter.
As day trips they are tiring: more than 6 hours in the car for a few hours on the mountain. We usually suggest at least one night, and many travellers stay a few days.
Our Belgrade to Zlatibor and Belgrade to Kopaonik transfers take you there with your luggage, and you can book the ride back for the day you leave.
Shopping at Inđija outlet (about 40 min)
Fashion Park Outlet in Inđija is about 40 minutes from Belgrade, just off the highway to Novi Sad. It is an open-air outlet centre with brand stores and cafes, popular with visitors who want a shopping day.
It is easy to combine with Novi Sad or Sremski Karlovci, since they are on the same road. With a driver, your shopping bags stay in the van while you go on to the next stop.

Train, bus or private driver?
For Novi Sad, the train is the best choice if you only want the city. The fast line makes it an easy trip, and you can check times on srbijavoz.rs. Buses go to most other places on this list, but connections to monasteries, viewpoints and fortresses are few and slow.
A private driver makes sense when you want several stops in one day, travel as a group or family, or carry luggage. The driver waits at every stop, and the route can change on the day. Our Mercedes V-Class vans take a whole group with bags, and the vehicle is never shared. See the fleet.
